    The Wild Island

      Antonia Fraser
$value['title']

Here, Jemima Shore, investigator and TV personality, arrives at Inverness Station for a Highland holiday. The sun is shining. Paradise, she thinks. But at that moment, she hears a voice: "All this way for a funeral." So begins an adventure far removed from Jemima's visions of heather-covered hills, crystal-clear streams, romantic men in kilts, fairy-tale castles....Instead, she is plunged into the strange world of the aristocratic Beauregard family with its tensions, its jealousies, and its violence, in many ways a primitive world dominated by the land and its possessing. The setting is the Wild Island itself, sometimes enchanting, but too often frighteningly remote; the streams, not silvery, but brown and sinister; her holiday home, with its disturbing, sometimes terrifying, influences; the people--the dashing war hero Colonel Henry and his sons, the forthright old priest Father Flanagan, Bridie the family servant, Clementina the wayward heiress...none of them quite what they seem. And then there is the specter of the Scottish "freedom fighters," in the shape of the self-styled army of the Red Rose. It all adds up to a brilliantly told story of mystery and intrigue on the Wild Island.

TO AVENGE HIS PAST, HE HAS TO RISK HIS FUTURE While tracking down the men behind a DarkNet marketplace where everything, even murder, is available for barter, FBI Special Agent Sean Reilly crosses paths with a man who claims to know the truth about the death of Reilly’s father, back when Reilly was ten. A death that had been considered a suicide—until now. In chasing after the potentially devastating revelations about that hidden past, Reilly awakens other dormant monsters—a cabal of assassins whose unusual methods have escaped detection for decades, whose victims have spanned continents, and whose leaders would rather remain hidden in the shadows. At any cost. Watched, manipulated, and framed for crimes he didn't commit, Reilly becomes a fugitive, making it next to impossible for him to uncover the truth while protecting his family. He's left with no choice but to risk everything to unearth secrets that would shake the country to its core—if he were ever allowed to get that far. Read THE END GAME and dive into Reilly’s most personal—and most dangerous—story yet. “History, mystery, suspense, and action—Khoury knows the recipe for a good read.” —Library Journal “A world-class writer of pure-bred thrillers.” —The Telegraph “Khoury’s thrillers engage the reader’s mind, even as they move at a breakneck pace.” —Booklist **Review "History, mystery, suspense, and action--Khoury knows the recipe for a good read." --Library Journal on Rasputin's Shadow "A fast-paced thrill-ride... a fine thriller to start the new year with." --Booklist on The Devil's Elixir "A world-class writer of pure-bred thrillers ... [joins] Connelly, Child, Crais & Co at the top table-a feat this achieves with aplomb." --The Telegraph (UK) on The Devil's Elixir "Vivid, energetic scenes ensure that Khoury's tale never falters or bores. It's the sort of novel that could make a colorful movie, but meanwhile, enjoy the book." --Kirkus Reviews on The Devil's Elixir "Sublime narrative ... a full-throttle action-adventure thriller wrapped in a political cautionary tale with a gratifyingly eloquent center." --Library Journal on The Templar Salvation "A thoughtful book with a powerful message and yet also a thrilling read with compelling, well-developed characters. Highly recommended." --Library Journal on The Sign "Khoury's thrillers engage the reader's mind, even as they move at a breakneck pace. Readers who like their thrillers to have a solid intellectual component will enjoy Khoury's books very much. Given the high quality of each of his novels, it seems fair to say that he may be around for a while." --Booklist on The Sign (Starred Review) "This story captivates with plausibility and imagination. It's fiercely intelligent and equally curious. [Khoury] has an intense brand of storytelling all his own. The Sign is a prize to be savored."  --Steve Berry, bestselling author of The 14th Colony, on The Sign "A pulse-pounding thriller that spans continents in pursuit of an audacious if implausible hi-tech conspiracy to reshape the global balance of power, told in 85 punchy chapters, which cries out Hollywood blockbuster." --The Telegraph (UK) on The Sign "Maybe the most ambitious fictional work of 2007... enough adventure, excitement and speculation to fill three books." --Joe Hartlaub, Bookreporter.com on The Sanctuary "Khoury makes the conspiracy feel utterly believable and imbues his characters with infectious passion for finding the truth. A surefire hit with fans of conspiracy-based historical thrillers." --Booklist on The Sanctuary "Remember the impact of The Last Templar? Well, here we go again. More dual time (1750 and 2003), this explores the secret of human longevity. Terrific Stuff." --Bookseller Magazine on The Sanctuary "Fans of Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code who are searching for another outstanding historical thriller need look no further than Raymond Khoury's spectacular debut novel ... An insanely fast paced thriller that includes breathtaking twists and jaw-dropping bombshells on practically every page, Khoury's conspiracy-laden debut -- a blend of historical fiction, suspense, romance, and wild religious speculation -- will open up a can of existential worms that will be all but impossible to close ... The highly volatile subject matter discussed within The Last Templar will spark endless hours of heated debate -- and the conclusion (oh, the brilliant conclusion!) will leave readers absolutely dumbstruck." --Paul G Allen, Barnes & Noble Editor on The Last Templar "Any reader encountering The Last Templar will want 1) a film version, and 2) more novels from Khoury, not necessarily in that order. Recommended." --Joe Hartlaub, Bookreporter.com on The Last Templar About the Author RAYMOND KHOURY is the New York Times and international bestselling author of four previous Reilly novels: Rasputin's Shadow, The Devil's Elixir, The Templar Salvation, and his debut, The Last Templar, as well as two stand-alone thrillers, The Sign and The Sanctuary.     Faceless Killers: A Mystery

      Henning Mankell
$value['title']

First in the Kurt Wallander series. It was a senselessly violent crime: on a cold night in a remote Swedish farmhouse an elderly farmer is bludgeoned to death, and his wife is left to die with a noose around her neck. And as if this didn’t present enough problems for the Ystad police Inspector Kurt Wallander, the dying woman’s last word is foreign, leaving the police the one tangible clue they have—and in the process, the match that could inflame Sweden’s already smoldering anti-immigrant sentiments.Unlike the situation with his ex-wife, his estranged daughter, or the beautiful but married young prosecutor who has peaked his interest, in this case, Wallander finds a problem he can handle. He quickly becomes obsessed with solving the crime before the already tense situation explodes, but soon comes to realize that it will require all his reserves of energy and dedication to solve.Amazon.com ReviewIf you remember with pleasure those dark and gloomy Martin Beck mysteries by Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo, you'll be glad to plunge into the first of Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallender mysteries to appear in English. Wallender's personal life can occasionally seem more depressing than even a provincial Swedish detective should be asked to bear, but his investigative skills are strictly first rate. And Mankell's story of the brutal murder of an elderly farm couple uncovers an unusual aspect of life in modern Sweden--a streak of fear and prejudice against the many newcomers from Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe who have sought asylum there. From Publishers WeeklyIn his first appearance in English, Swedish bestselling author Mankell combines thriller-quality entertainment with a depiction of anti-foreigner prejudice in Sweden, painted here as a very chilly place indeed. Since his wife walked out on him, Kurt Wallender, a middle-aged cop in the small town of Lenarp, has drowned his sorrows in opera and far too much liquor. Such consolations can't help him absorb the scene at the Lovgren farm, where elderly Johannes Lovgren has been brutally beaten and stabbed to death and where his wife, Maria, is found barely alive with a noose around her neck. Rydberg, a police force old-timer, says the noose's unusual knot and the word foreigner, which Maria uttered before she died, are important. Wallender puts those clues on the back burner when he learns that Johannes, ostensibly a simple farmer, had a secret life involving wealth and connections unknown to his wife. However, a leak to the press complicates the investigation by arousing anti-immigrant feelings, some of which are expressed in anonymous threats. Mankell is clearly a skilled writer, and his portrait of Wallender (who periodically slides beneath respectability) is effective. But he provides essential information only at the last minute, which makes the solution feel more like an appendix than a conclusion. Also, American readers may find odd Mankell's bundling of his upright anti-racism message with broad notions of what constitutes acceptable social control. More information to be announced soon on this forthcoming title from Penguin USAFrom BooklistHalf-alien PI Ukiah Oregon is in bad grace with his moms, Jo and Lara, and his protecting pack. They are unhappy about Ukiah's engagement to FBI agent Indigo Zheng: the moms because, though Ukiah is a couple of centuries old, Indigo is too old for him; and the pack because he is marrying at all. Partner and mentor Max Bennett is on Ukiah's side, however, and that is critical when the routine tracking of a missing boy exposes Ukiah to a fanatical, malignant cult that kidnaps his son, Kitanning. The cultists have learned of the existence of the Ontongard, descendants of Ukiah's enemies who are still programmed to attempt to conquer Earth for their hive, and they are every bit as dangerous as those they call "demons," for they have acquired Ontongard chemical and biological weapons. Well-chosen everyday details as well as fire, murder, sudden death, and a lot of sex lead to an ending that resolves some of Ukiah's problems but leaves Earth's fate hanging fire for eagerly anticipated sequels. Bla BlaDear Readers, I need to tell you a little about this book before you go in, so maybe you’ll understand why I stepped outside of my usual box to write it. I was reading a book recently that was about the mafia. I love mafia books. I’ve read a good portion of them. The mafia leader and his lover, his forbidden flame, the woman he purchased, the daughter of his enemy, you name it. I’ve read it. You know what I haven’t read? What you’re about to read. Back to the book I was reading. There was mention of a mafia leader who had a wife, a lovely wife, a good wife, a loyal wife, a wife he loved. But he had something else. He had a mistress. A woman on the side. Supposedly for status. A woman to make him look strong and superior. In fact, it was deemed that if he did NOT have one, that he was perceived as weak. My attention was sparked. I did research. Turns out that is indeed true in a lot of those situations. Not all of them, no, but some of them. And I said to myself. What is her life like? The other woman? The one used as a status symbol? What does she do with her free time? Who is she? Why does she do what she does? How does she fit into his world? How does it feel for her to be what she is? Does she hurt? Is she happy? How come nobody has told her story? So. I’m telling her story.I hope you love it as much as I loved writing it. Bella xx
