The White Plumes of Navarre: A Romance of the Wars of Religion

      S. R. Crockett
$value['title']

The night was hot in Paris. Breathless heat had brooded over the city all Saturday, the 23rd of August, 1572. It was the eve of Saint Bartholomew. The bell of Saint Germain l'Auxerrois had just clashed out the signal. The Louvre was one blaze of lights. Men with lanterns and poleaxes, as if going to the shambles to kill oxen, hurried along the streets. Only in the houses in which were lodged the great Huguenot gentlemen, come to the city for the marriage of the King's sister Marguerite to the King of Navarre, there were darkness and silence. None had warned them—or, at least, they had taken no warning. If any suspected, the word of a King, his sworn oaths and multitudinous safe-conducts, lulled them back again into security. In one chamber, high above the courtyard, a light burned faint and steady. It was that beside the bed of the great Admiral—Coligny. He had been treacherously wounded by the arquebuse of one of the guard of the King's brother—Monsieur de France, Henry Duke of Anjou, afterwards to be known to history as Henry III., the favourite son of Catherine de Medici, the cunningest, and the most ungrateful.

    Message from Gondwana

      David Wiley
$value['title']

A corporation sends a team to Gondwana, a jungle planet. It is perfect for pharmaceutical prospecting, exotic vegetation loaded with strange chemical compounds that could make the company rich. The newest member of the team, Lani Callis, wants to impress the team's veterans, but first must overcome her own limitations and a planet that is either trying to kill them or may be just curious.A corporation, Alchemistica, sends a team to Gondwana, a planet covered with a thick jungle. The planet is perfect for pharmaceutical prospecting, full of exotic vegetation loaded with even stranger chemical compounds that may make Alchemistica rich or kill the prospecting team or both, it is all the same to their corporate bosses. The newest member of the team, biochemist Lani Callis, wants to impress the team's veterans on her first prospecting trip, but she must overcome her own limitations to do so. Alchemistica hired Lani on the strength of how well she did on a holographic video game, not on how well she relates to others. She must learn to communicate to survive, for, as the human team studies Gondwana, it becomes apparent that the planet is also studying humans and the two do not speak the same language.Authors note: Message from Gondwana is a short novella set in the same universe as the Eichi Testaments, which although well in the future, still bears all too many similarities to the current humanverse, especially the pursuit of profit. Humanity has spread across a hundred worlds, united by the Second Galactic Empire, an authoritarian Church Universal, and the corporations or kartels. Message from Gondwana takes place some seventy years before the main story arc of the Eichi Testament series. Although categorized as hard science fiction, the science in Gondwana is less about physics and rayguns than it is biology and genetics—although a laser karbine does come in handy from time to time. The novella also shows the writing style of David Wiley, including a flawed, but strong female protagonist, plenty of sharp dialog, some romance (how can being stuck on a planet of lush jungles not be romantic—unless it is because that jungle wants to kill you?), and characters getting themselves out of sticky situations (usually) by their wits and not just with a bigger gun or through newly-discovered superpowers. Enjoy!

Autumn took a bus to the end of the line. She found an abandoned amusement park surrounded by the sea, the sky, and nothing. But someone was waiting for her on the shore. Someone who knew her intimately.Book 1 of The Chronicles of Nevin Reasoner introduces the title character. Nevin Reasoner never completed an advanced degree because he wanted freedom to explore the sciences without pedantic constraints. As a result, he lost his job as a Lecturer at Hempstead College. On his last day, he discovered a peculiar small man in his office recovering from a physical assault. Anson, dressed in tunic and breeches, claimed he was a “mage” from a place Nevin could not find on any map. Anson pleaded for help in ending persecution, anarchy and devastation in his land.Nevin refused to believe that magery existed beyond sleight-of-hand, superstition, or rational explanations—until he was shamed for his own scientific chauvinism. Following some inspiring and amusing experiences, Nevin agreed to help Anson and together they contrived a plan. After a deliverance to Antrim by extraordinary means, Nevin gradually sorted out the scientific plausibility for the spellwork he witnessed and helped carry out. After all, he saw nothing supernatural, no talking animals, and no items created out of nothing. The mage and the “sage” teamed up with a soldier for a so-called alliance for Antrim. Both magery and scientific acumen would be needed to supplement their courage in overcoming obstacles to pacify the warring kingdoms. Sometimes they had to deal with physical altercations, forcing Nevin to use his relatively large size in an unfamiliar role as a fighter. Unfortunately, another stranger to the land brought science for nefarious uses to aide one side with impending tragic results. Forced to add a high-born woman to their troupe, they put their plan into action to turn the tide of war.Book 2 of The Chronicles of Nevin Reasoner picks up the story when they must face the destructive effects of science gone wild.

    British Zombie Breakout: Part One

      Peter Salisbury
$value['title']

Part 1. After the first zombie breakout infected half the country, the authorities should have been more careful. No-one in Kilkorne, a tiny fishing village with a picturesque castle and harbour, expected an attack. Five teenagers and five adults must attempt to survive a horde of highly infectious, half dead creatures, the army's attempt to burn down the village and a suspected case of haunting.Part One. The authorities should have been more careful after the first zombie breakout infected half of England and disrupted lives right across the country. Unfortunately, either someone got careless, again, or the disease was far more virulent than anyone expected. The remote fishing village of Kilkorne with its picturesque castle and harbour was the last place to expect an attack, despite its proximity to the experimental facility where the disease was invented. Once the second outbreak had been officially announced by the Ministry, anyone resisting capture was to be shot as being infected with zombieism. Alternatively you could surrender and be kept in a quarantine camp, where last time the survival rate was zero.Refusing to accept either option, five teenagers and five adults separately begin journeys from opposite sides of the village. They attempt to stay one step ahead of an insane horde of highly infectious, half dead creatures, the army's orders to shoot on sight, and the Ministry's instructions to burn down the village. Furthermore, the endeavour was not exactly helped by a suspected case of haunting.Short story 14,500 words.

    Software Evolution

      John Fajo
$value['title']

Arriving in the big city one may find oneself lost, especially if one is to come across an elusive man like the baron, who never reveals himself. Yet there is no escape from destiny as the events unfold, and the protagonists confront each other for multiple showdowns that are to change their lives and the course of history.John FajoSoftware EvolutionAbstractAs the title indicates this is a book about software evolution. Software evolution has two meanings and consequently the novel has two continuous parallel themes, one is thriller-like and its main purpose is to give a supportive framework for the other, which is about development in the thinking manner of a person at childhood’s end, this being called software evolution. Besides these, the book attempts to pinpoint the misconceptions people have about the main essence of science, any science for that matter. Here the second meaning of software evolution emerges. The book is organized into four parts and follows the classical scheme: introduction, main theme, interlude and conclusion. The events are depicted more as slides or short footages, the time elapsing in-between is irrelevant, and time hasn’t the usual meaning due to the second theme; it’s linear from the characters’ point of view, but has non-linear aspects otherwise. In ‘The inspector’, we have a build up to the main theme. The protagonist, the inspector arrives in a big city, where he is faced with a different world, his ideas are challenged. In ‘The scientist’, the main theme unfolds. We step into the world of a scientist, not a joyful inventor or a forgetful genius, but an emotionless and well-organized person on an island secluded from the rest of the world. Most of the events are presented from another character’s point of view, which allows perspective to be obtained. It is also vital for the second theme, for this other, nameless person is the one the scientist talks to, presents his ideas, fears, love and hate.In ‘In deserted nowhere’ our nameless character is banned, has to travel to a far away planet. He is entirely alone, only a dream world helps him survive his solitude. Romanticism is defended; romanticism the scientist criticized in ‘The scientist’. This part also allows the thriller theme to continue several years later than it had ended, without any abrupt jumps. In ‘The beggar’, we have the conclusion, childhood’s end. The two main characters confront each other for the last time.John Fajo, 1996
