Among the Night People

      Clara Dillingham Pierson

MY DEAR LITTLE FRIENDS:--You can never guess how much I have enjoyed writing these stories of the night-time, and I must tell you how I first came to think of doing so. I once knew a girl--and she was not a very little girl, either, who was afraid of the dark. And I have known three boys who were as brave as could be by daylight, but who would not run on an errand alone after the lamps were lighted.

The Pirate of the Mediterranean: A Tale of the Sea

      William Henry Giles Kingston
$value['title']

Malta, which I have selected as the opening scene of the following story, is, from its historical recollections, its fine climate, and brilliant skies, a very interesting spot; although, for such beauty as its scenery possesses, it must be acknowledged that it is indebted very much more to art than to nature. Notwithstanding, however, the noise it has made in the world, and will, I suspect, should we ever be driven into a war with our vivacious continental neighbour, again make, it is but a rock some twenty miles long, and twelve broad, in the middle of the Mediterranean, with a smaller rock, Gozo, to the north of it, and was, probably, at one time of this planet’s existence, merely a continuation of Sicily or Italy’s toe, or a lump, as it were, kicked off into the middle of the sea.

    Fighting the Flames

      R. M. Ballantyne
$value['title']

Frank Wilders is a bright, shining young star rising to distinguished heroism in the London Fire Brigade. No one is more proud of his accomplishments than his younger brother, Willie. As Frank battles the flames, Willie learns what the heart of a hero is made of. Through daring rescues, valiant hard work, plots of arson, attempted murder and winning the worthy hearts of virtuous young women, the best and worst of mid-19th century London is exposed. Fighting the Flames: A Tale of the London Fire Brigade is a masterpiece of fiction; a beautiful tapestry woven of adventure, heroism and the broad spectrum of human nature. R.M. Ballantyne expertly maneuvers his extensive and intricate cast of characters through a series of crossed paths, creating lively interplay between the wide varieties of human personalities and foibles that create the diversity of city life--all in the shadow of the great nightly battle with the flames.

Half a dozen Chicago newsboys, varying in age from ten to sixteen years, with piles of papers in their hands, joined in the chorus. They were standing in front and at the sides of the Sherman House, on the corner of Clark and Randolph Streets, one of the noted buildings in the Lake City. On the opposite side of Randolph Street stands a gloomy stone structure, the Court House and City Hall. In the shadow of these buildings, at the corner, Luke Walton, one of the largest newsboys, had posted himself. There was something about his bearing and appearance which distinguished him in a noticeable way from his companions. To begin with, he looked out of place. He was well grown, with a frank, handsome face, and was better dressed than the average newsboy. That was one reason, perhaps, why he preferred to be by himself, rather than to engage in the scramble for customers which was the habit of the boys around him. It was half-past five. The numerous cars that passed were full of business men, clerks, and boys, returning to their homes after a busy day. Luke had but two papers left, but these two for some unaccountable reason remained on his hands an unusual length of time. But at length a comfortable-looking gentleman of middle age, coming from the direction of La Salle Street, paused and said, "You may give me a News, my boy." "Here you are, sir," he said, briskly. The gentleman took the paper, and thrusting his hand into his pocket, began to feel for a penny, but apparently without success. "I declare," he said, smiling, "I believe I am penniless. I have nothing but a five-dollar bill." "Never mind, sir! Take the paper and pay me to morrow." "But I may not see you." "I am generally here about this time." "And if I shouldn't see you, you will lose the penny." "I will risk it, sir," said Luke, smiling. "You appear to have confidence in me." "Yes, sir." "Then it is only fair that I should have confidence in you." Luke looked puzzled, for he didn't quite understand what was in the gentleman's mind. "I will take both of your papers. Here is a five-dollar bill. You may bring me the change to-morrow, at my office, No. 155 La Salle Street. My name is Benjamin Afton." "But, sir," objected Luke, "there is no occasion for this. It is much better that I should trust you for two cents than that you should trust me with five dollars." "Probably the two cents are as important to you as five dollars to me. At any rate, it is a matter of confidence, and I am quite willing to trust you." "Thank you, sir, but——" "I shall have to leave you, or I shall be home late to dinner." Before Luke had a chance to protest further, he found himself alone, his stock of papers exhausted, and a five-dollar bill in his hand. While he stood on the corner in some perplexity, a newsboy crossed Randolph Street, and accosted him. "My eyes, if you ain't in luck, Luke Walton," he said. "Where did you get that bill? Is it a one?" "No, it's a five." "Where'd you get it?" "A gentleman just bought two papers of me." "And gave you five dollars!... --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

  <use xlink:href="#icon-cat"></use> History & Fiction
Read online

<use xlink:href="#icon-views"></use> 442

  <use xlink:href="#icon-info"></use> Published: 2008

     Moles

       David Wesley Hill

These undercover operatives were definitely not from Russia ... a short science fiction story by David Wesley Hill. What if the tables were turned, and the hunter became the hunted? Skyla is the mother of three upcoming heroes in the Battle Born series. This is a stand-alone story, but I hope you'll check out my other books as well. All my books blend elements of science-fiction, fantasy, and paranormal romance. The Battle Born books lean more toward sci-fi, but there is still plenty of steamy romance. If you are looking for a warm, fluffy read, BLOODLINE is definitely not for you!****What some people are saying about Bloodline:D.G. Colorado5 Stars "A very captivating and mysterious read. I read alot of books on health, finances, etc. I find myself picking up Shannon’s book to read a little first and I never get to my other books as I am drawn right into the story with a hungry anticipation of what's going to happen next....my heart even races sometimes I get so involved. I stay up much too late as I have to force myself too lay it down. Love the way each chapter goes to the characters lives, makes you feel as if you are truly involved yourself! Shannon has such a marvelous imagination!!! A MUST read!!!!"P.M., Alabama5 Stars "Oh wow! Took me to places I never imagined! I love the way the characters came alive with each new chapter. It was hard for me to put the book down. With anticipation waiting... waiting... to find out what's going to happen NEXT? A great read. 5 stars"S.W. ND, 5 Stars "I really like the story line. The way Shannon K Brown paints a picture by describing the sights, and feelings of the things happening to Luna is AMAZING!!!! I can really feel like I’m right there. I really like the struggle between Bane and Ashmodai for Luna’s soul. To me it really hits home with the struggle between good and evil that live in us all. I have really enjoyed reading Bloodline and cant wait to start book 2!!! Shannon K Brown is truly an AUTHOR!!!! 5 Stars"****Sure I fell in love with Lucifer’s son, but so what? Worse things have happened, believe me! Like the time my demonic father nailed my palms to a cross, or the time I shoved a dagger into my breast, sacrificing myself for The Coven of Hallows in order to save my best friend. Yup, worse things have definitely happened. But I’m here to tell you, loving Bane, one of Lucifer’s four angelic sons is not easy! Especially since he and his brothers are bound to The Coven of Hallows and the only way they can escape them is if the Lanchester blood runs dry. I just so happen to be Luna Lanchester, the last of my bloodline. And this kind of puts me in a predicament. Four immortal demons want me dead. This puts Bane in a predicament too. He has a decision to make. He can deny his love for me, murder me and be free from The Coven, or he can protect me from his hellish brothers, be forever bound to the coven, and suffer his father’s wrath. Because of the blood-tie that enables Lucifer’s sons to have access to my mind, I am about to be attacked from within by some pretty malevolent forces. The entire Coven of Hallows wants my blood. Not to mention, Rune, Bane’s sadistic brother, has made a horrible fetish of biting me. But I am not afraid (insert mental eye-roll), for I am a warrior. A descendent of the most fearsome warriors this earth has ever seen. Two towns are destroyed, and there is one survivor, Pollock Drake, a 15 year old. He is taken into custody as a suspected terrorist. Another attack occurs during the interrogation. Drake escapes and fights to survive against a country that is after him while trying to kill what destroyed his home. Told in the curious narrative style of epistolary form. It takes information from different newspapers around the country, journal articles, "confidential presidential transcripts," and many more to tell a story about one man and how he affects the country around him. One question remains, though, what is the Dragon Cycle? Is it about a real dragon? Is this dragon even real? Is this dragon a person who belongs to a group called Dragon?
