Sun Horse, Moon Horse

      Rosemary Sutcliff
$value['title']

Sun Horse, Moon Horse is the story of Lubrin Dhu, third son of the Chieftain of the Iceni - the Early Iron Age horse people, who live by their skill in breeding and driving their great horse herds on the high chalk downs. As a child, Lubrin sees the patterns of a private magic in his mind's eye - in the vision of a galloping white mare leading her herd over the crest of a hill. This picture-magic he returns to again and again as he grows up, to the puzzlement and ridicule of his fellows. In the end it is his gift that releases his tribe from their own conquerors and gives them the freedom to start their clan life anew. In this interpretation of how the White Horse of Uffington, in Berkdhire, might have been made, Rosemary Sutcliff has created a story of great sensitivity and understanding.

He first of all succeeds in beating the chip and PIN system used for the hole-in-the-wall cash dispensers, and then manages to break down the internationally used security system. While he and his team work on developing a more robust system, Robin determines to right a few wrongs round the world before marketing his new computer programme as a replacement. Helpless Governments look on as anxious banks struggle to find out who is behind the massive secret withdrawals from their customers accounts. Using the Swiss banking system, Robin Hood and his band of computer scientists manage to reimburse a team of Russian mathematicians, exploited by an unscrupulous US computer giant, while white farmers evicted by the corrupt regime in Zimbabwe also receive compensation, at the expense of Ministers and other senior officials whose bank accounts are emptied and hoards of diamonds hijacked. An intriguing tale of computer warfare waged against corruption has an unexpected twist in the tail, which leaves the reader to work out his own conclusion.

    The Flowers of Keiwha

$value['title']

200 K-pop obsessed Japanese girls at a language learning programme in Seoul; transliteration of who said what to who when and where in three languages. a handful of foreign guys? an ex-German with a chip on his shoulder? talking green elephant? minor riff on Yale & Seattle.==long description/ author's noteI wrote this book after 'Harajuku Sunday,' which covers 10 years in the lives of American expats in Tokyo, starting from first arrival as 22 year arts university grads to the first adult realities of being 30+. Wanting a completely different challenge, I focused on seven weeks rather than ten years, ensemble cast of 200 Japanese girls rather than half-a-dozen Westerners, Japanese abroad rather than foreigners in Japan, and a few supernatural/preternatural 'slipstream' elements rather than absolute naturalism. The book possibly has two appeals: at least a third is somewhat overwraught 'fuzzy focus' romanticism between two artists with lots of lush description, and then much of the rest is sort of analytical/descriptive about 'Germans in Seoul' or 'which Japanese personalities interplay with which German ones' or 'how does a tri-cultural classroom divide socially.' I admit the thought does go through my mind to make this a multimedia sort of thing, complete with maps, pictures, architectual sketches, but this is some leisure activity for decades from now.It is said that Japanese culture is inscrutable and the people are "strong but silent." Perhaps perversely, by the time you figure out what is said, it is already too late to formulate an appropriate response. THus, the Japan-expert is constantly on the fringes of things, able to participate on peripherally in a closed society, but filled with a perpetual nostalgia for the past.Enjoy! This ebook will be free for at least three or four months, and represents one person's contribution to the collective culture of the world. I can't guarantee I can keep it zero-cost forever! -MC

Mike Casey does it again with these short-stories which lure the unsuspecting reader to the cliff edge and leave her laughing at the rocks belowIn the mid-1960's, a teenage, hippie crash-pad scene developed in New York's East Village. Many of the arrivals were escaping repressive or abusive home environments. During this time, I was forced to run away twice before my father would consent for me to grow long hair. Today they call it "The Generation Gap," but it was really a Generation War. However, life in the East Village got increasingly bizarre as hard drug use increased, revealing a dark underbelly to the emerging hippie subculture.
