    Brewster's Millions

      George Barr McCutcheon
$value['title']

Would you be able to spend a million dollars in cash and leave yourself penniless if it meant you would then be given many more millions? That's poor Monty Brewster's dilemma in this charming tale. Just as poor Monty Brewster, twice heir to a fortune, is beginning to adjust to his cold and distant grandfather's "paltry" million-dollar bequest, an even more mysterious benefactor emerges offering to leave him some "real" wealth. All he has to do is be penniless at nine o'clock on the morning of his 26th birthday. It seems like an easy task, but Monty discovers that it is no simple matter to divest oneself of a million dollars, especially as the bank insists on paying him $19,607.84 in interest per day. And what can you do when each ridiculous "sure-loss" suddenly skyrockets when you invest in it? Money seems to flow in faster than a person can throw it overboard. And then there are Peggy and Barbara; how are they going to react to each attempt to squander a fortune? Can Monty keep the girl while losing the money? First published in 1902 under the pseudonym Richard P. Greaves, Brewster's Millions was one of George Barr McCutcheon's most successful titles. The prolific author was noted for his ability to write page-turners, full of vivid characters and with an attention to detail. There have, in fact, been six movie versions of this one book, most recently starring Richard Pryor and John Candy. That is vivid testament to a great story well told.

    333 Miles

      Craig Birk
$value['title']

The most real book you will ever read about today’s upper middle class American male. Join Alex, Gary, Mike and the Rodge on a hilarious Vegas road trip and a search for meaning. Marriage, sex, monogamy, money, porn, diamond rings, and the Smurfs (of course), are just a few of the issues covered.IT STARTED SEVEN YEARS AGO...A brutal murder in a small town, carefully staged to echo a crime scene from 1975.No clues. No leads. Just questions. The following year it happened again. And then again...Every year. Same day. Same place. Exact same scene from the past... No resolution. Now, FBI Special Agent Constance Mandalay has less than four days to stop the annual horror from marking its eighth anniversary, but she also has another problem: The residents of the small town just might be protecting a killer secret...SA Mandalay is dispatched as an eleventh hour replacement for another agent, tasked with investigating a cold case that portends the chilling copycat murder each year. Armed only with a woefully incomplete case file and her dogged determination, she seeks out the answers before another body can be sent to the morgue. However, she finds that sometimes the answers simply lead to more questions; and that the past is sometimes destined to repeat itself, with a vengeance... MERRIE AXEMAS is a creepy police-procedural, thriller novella with a wicked paranormal twist, from the warped mind of M. R. Sellars, author of the award-winning Rowan Gant Investigations series of supernatural thrillers. Although set during the Christmas holiday season, it is an enthralling read at any time of year.SPECIAL NOTE:MERRIE AXEMAS: A Killer Holiday Tale was originally written and distributed as a free gift during the 2010 Christmas season to long time fans of M. R. Sellars' RGI novels. However, soon after its release, readers were clamoring for more of Special Agent Constance Mandalay, as well as more of the "Merrie Axemas story." Therefore, the full-length novel, IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER was born (released November 2011) and officially launched the new Special Agent Constance Mandalay Novels thriller series. In effect, MERRIE AXEMAS is both a stand-alone novella, and a bone-chilling sample cut straight from the heart of the novel IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER. It launches you into Special Agent Constance Mandalay's world, brings you to the edge, and then taunts you with the same unanswered questions that plague her. Finally, it presents you with a spoiler-free alternate ending to that of the full-length novel.FROM THE "VIRTUAL" BACK COVER:Little Merrie Callahan is all grown up now.She doesn't believe in Santa anymore. But she still has an axe to grind with the man in the red suit...And, for FBI Special Agent Constance Mandalay, the Christmas Holiday will never be the same again.

    Elgin

      M.A. Harris
$value['title']

An adventure set in a world at a slight angle from ours. Modern day Cowboy Elgin Chalmer’s finds that man eating lizard girls, spider monsters, Were’s and Vamp’s are far harder to deal with than steers. This isn’t SteamPunk or UrbanFantasy it’s QuantPunk SciFi and first of many stories mixing ‘quantum’ scifi and fantasy. This is a ‘cleaned up’ edition of my NaNoWriMo Submission Nov ‘12Elgin’s old life was nothing much, Beauty Wyoming was as beautiful and remote as one could get, a town of cowboys and Indians, in a setting of rangeland, mountains and lakes. Elgin Chalmer’s was a cowboy and a part breed black-sheep slacker living with his huge Siamese cat Humph in a forty year old trailer. Life was OK for Elgin, he didn’t want much and didn’t get any more. Then one raw snowy day he made the mistake of heading into the mountains with a gut full of whisky and a head muddled by rotten drugs...death came easily considering. And that was when things started to get really messy. A world of alien dangers and powers were waking up after two thousand years in hibernation and humanity’s protector needed a new helper. Now Elgin found himself dealing with flesh eating lizard girls, ancient spider monsters, along with werewolves and vampires who didn’t always play by the rules. And on top of it all he had to get used to eating sharks, raw and still fighting. But now of course he had a chance to meet up with the cool girls; The Wiccan proprietor of the local New-Age gift shop, with an ancient Indian totem in her basement, the pistol packing deputy with a secret, and the beautiful Russian spy with a heart of gold and the killer instincts of a she wolf.Elgin’s new life was....complicated.Some words of explanation. First, the National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo, (www.nanowrimo.org) is run by a tiny nonprofit called he Office of Letters and Light, an organization that promotes writing in all its glorious permutations among the young, young at heart, and not so young (among whom I fall in the right hand distribution tail these days.) I wrote the first 60,000 words or so of Elgin in November 2011 and finished the remaining half by February 2012, since then, among many other things, my father and I have been editing so I can submit it for publication at Smashwords.Second, this book isn’t SteamPunk, UrbanFantasy, Fantasy, I like to think of it as a type of SciFi, what I call Quantum Punk. Using the possibilities our quantum universe opens up to the imagination as a basis for something that tries to be Science Fiction with a very strong tint of UrbanFantasy and SteamPunk, I hope you enjoy.

$value['title']

Dr. Ahuja is a world renowned Space scientist and his lovely, intelligent daughter Divya dreams to be one among the stars. The Earth is sound asleep in peace and calm only to be awakened to startling and catastrophic events. The book of prophecy and an ancient astrologer’s word has come true.Alien attack and the destruction of the entire solar system are beginning of a new start. The ‘End of the world’ is near but everyone, except Divya is unaware of it. Divya is an Indo-American high school girl from San Francisco. Her father is a scientist with NASA. On her school trip to India, she discovers an ancient book which predicts a disaster to be indicated by a sign in the sky. Divya is terrified when she sees the sign one day. But nobody believes her and finally the prediction comes true – the solar system is facing its end. Sun undergoes drastic chemical reaction due to it’s collision with a comet. The sun undergoes a phenomenon called ‘reunion of solar system’ and starts engulfing the planets. The ancient book had mentioned that a solution to this disaster was brought down on earth thousands of years ago in a meteor rain. Scientists are doing all that they could do to save the earth as the earth inches day by day towards its horrific end. The temperatures on earth increase day by day. On one such hot day, Divya goes out to the lonely beach and finds an alien friend who was brought down along with the meteors thousands of years ago. Divya is sure that he is the saviour of earth as mentioned in the book. But maybe it was too late now. She names him Ami. Ami is highly intelligent as compared to humans. He has special powers too. Meanwhile scientists try to move earth away from sun by programming satellites but as the doomsday was destined, the experiment backfires. Satellites loose control over earth and earth begins to roll randomly in space! Scientists can do nothing to stop it and everything is left to almighty. Then miraculously, as if the prayers of 7 billion people get answered, earth finally comes to halt in a new space. Everyone is relieved to have survived the doomsday. Soon there is a friend request from nearby planet Gianta. The Giantians are highly advanced and very helpful beings. They are very much like humans. Later on, it is revealed that earth was halted and saved only because of them. The humans are greatly impressed by the Giantians. The two planets are quick to share the technological knowledge to benefit mutually. But the Giantians are traitors disguised as friends. Their planet lacks natural resources and with their advanced technology they have created an amazingly beautiful synthetic world. Their intentions are obvious. They are blinded by the immense natural resource that the planet earth has. Their intention is to rule our planet and make us all their slaves. They had very cleverly inserted a Nano-chip in the delegates from earth who visited them. These people became their human robots and worked as per their command. Divya’s father is one of the human robots. But, before the Giantians could achieve their goal, Ami and Divya accidently come to know the truth. They help Divya’s father to recover back into a normal human. They want to recover others too. But it is too late. The population of human robots have increased beyond control and it very rapidly goes on increasing. Divya and Ami along with a handful of scientists are the only humans left. They get trapped by human robots all around them. Still they try to save the earth and finally Ami succeeds in saving all. Aliens are threatened as their plot completely fails. They want to take revenge and release the earth from its orbit. As a result, Earth once again starts rolling in space. But luckily, this time, it gets attracted by sun, which has become stable by now. Ami too is able to sense the signal from his star. Earth comes back in the solar system and Ami returns back to his home star.

In the severe, rock-scouring blizzards of the far north, the team comes across a hideous object from an elder age.     Crazy Rich Asians

      Kevin Kwan
$value['title']

Retail NookCrazy Rich Asians is the outrageously funny debut novel about three super-rich, pedigreed Chinese families and the gossip, backbiting, and scheming that occurs when the heir to one of the most massive fortunes in Asia brings home his ABC (American-born Chinese) girlfriend to the wedding of the season. When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and quality time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn't know is that Nick's family home happens to look like a palace, that she'll ride in more private planes than cars, and that with one of Asia's most eligible bachelors on her arm, Rachel might as well have a target on her back. Initiated into a world of dynastic splendor beyond imagination, Rachel meets Astrid, the It Girl of Singapore society; Eddie, whose family practically lives in the pages of the Hong Kong socialite magazines; and Eleanor, Nick's formidable mother, a woman who has very strong feelings about who her son should--and should not--marry. Uproarious, addictive, and filled with jaw-dropping opulence, Crazy Rich Asians is an insider's look at the Asian JetSet; a perfect depiction of the clash between old money and new money; between Overseas Chinese and Mainland Chinese; and a fabulous novel about what it means to be young, in love, and gloriously, crazily rich.Review“When Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians has a mother in Singapore telling her girls to finish everything on their plates because ‘there are children starving in America,’ it’s O.K. to get the joke. There’s no need to dwell on what it really means. Crazy Rich Asians is this summer’s ‘Bergdorf Blondes,’ over-the-top funny and a novelty to boot. Mr. Kwan delivers nonstop hoots about a whole new breed of rich, vulgar, brand-name-dropping conspicuous consumers, with its own delicacies, curses, vices, stereotypes (‘I hope she’s not one of those Taiwanese tornadoes!’) and acronyms. According to Mr. Kwan, this crowd uses U.B.C., as the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, is known, to mean ‘University of a Billion Chinese.’ How rich and vulgar are the Anglophile Asians of this debut novel? Rich enough to throw a diamond of more than 30 carats into a snowdrift and not look for it. So vulgar that a Cirque du Soleil troupe has to show up to convey that things have gotten crass. So steeped in wretched excess that one man boasts about the precise temperature his climate-controlled shoe closet should be.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times“Deliciously decadent . . . Rachel, an American-born Chinese (ABC), has no idea what to expect when she visits Singapore to meet her boyfriend Nick’s multibillionaire family. There, she discovers mind-blowing opulence--next season’s couture, palatial properties, million-dollar shopping sprees--and the over-the-top bad behavior that comes with it . . . This 48-karat beach read is crazy fun.” —Stephan Lee, Entertainment Weekly “There’s rich, there’s filthy rich, and then there’s crazy rich . . . A Pride and Prejudice-like send-up about an heir bringing his Chinese-American girlfriend home to meet his ancestor-obsessed family, the book hilariously skewers imperial splendor and the conniving antics of the Asians jet set.”--People “Crazy Rich Asians is like Dynasty on steroids with more private jets, bigger houses, and a lot more money. It is the very definition of a beach read. I finished it over a weekend and by the end was longing to see the ridiculously extravagant and over-the-top world that Mr. Kwan had created.... I predict this will be the 50 Shades of Grey of this summer.” --Michael Carl, VanityFair.com  “Read Kevin Kwan’s debut, Crazy Rich Asians, on an exotic beach in super-expensive sunglasses . . . [Rachel] encounters outré fashion, private jets, and a set of aristocratic values so antiquated they’d make the Dowager Countess proud.” —Entertainment Weekly Summer Roundup “With his debut novel, [Kwan] delivers an uproarious, comical satire about a jet-set life that most of us can only imagine. It’s a page-turner that will leave you wanting more.”—Claudia McNeilly, Hello! Magazine (Canada)“Mordantly funny . . . In Kevin Kwan’s winning summer satire, Crazy Rich Asians, a young woman discovers her boyfriend belongs to a milieu of unimaginable splendor—and snobbery.” —Vogue"Deliciously decadent . . . I predict this will be the 50 Shades of Grey of this summer." —Michael Carl, VanityFair.com “A juicy, close anthropological read of Singapore high society and its social and mating rituals . . . Kwan’s satirical portrayal rings so true, I fear he’ll need to bring a bodyguard next time he lands at Changi Airport. He gets the idiosyncratic details right: the market-savvy wives who day-trade and invest in poverty; . . . the encyclopedic fashion knowledge; the Bible-study get-togethers; the way the whole milieu is interrelated by blood or marriage. And he does a particularly good job of illustrating the divide . . . between mainland wealth and establishment money—an uneasy tension that is very real.”—Janice Y. K. Lee, Elle“Jane Austen, or maybe Edith Wharton, goes to Singapore, turning in this lively, entertaining novel of manners. . . . Kwan’s characters are urban sophisticates par excellence . . . A diverse set of characters and a light, unstrained touch move Kwan’s story along. . . . An elegant comedy and an auspicious debut.” --Kirkus (starred review)“Merit[s] a place on the must-read list of every development exec in town . . . Aimed at Bridget Jones lovers and those who got the satire behind Psy’s Gangnam Style.” —Andy Lewis, Hollywood Reporter “High-quality first-time fiction . . . [An] instant favorite . . . Opulence and zaniness reign when one of Singapore’s richest bachelors invites his American-born girlfriend to travel from New York to vacation in his native country.” —O, The Oprah Magazine "Kwan's debut is a fun, over-the-top romp through the unbelievable world of the Asian jet set, where anything from this season is already passé and one's pedigree is everything. . . . A witty tongue-in-cheek frolic about what it means to be from really old money and what it's like to be crazy rich." --Publishers Weekly Pick of the Week“Kwan’s debut is a scintillating fictional look into the opulent lives of fabulously wealthy Chinese expats . . . From its delightful opening scene onward, this sleek social satire offers up more than a few hilarious moments as it skewers the crafty, rich schemers who populate its pages.” —Kristine Huntley, Booklist"Crazy Rich Asians is an unputdownably funny, original, modern novel. An outrageous satire of the Asian squillionaire set, this book is like a Chinese Dallas meets Pride and Prejudice. The combination of gold homewares, couture, private jets, absurd social rules and snobbery is utterly hilarious. I actually couldn't put this book down to eat or to watch Downton Abbey." —Plum Sykes, bestselling author of Bergdorf Blondes“As spicily adventurous and lusciously satisfying as the renowned Singaporean street food Kevin Kwan's characters argue over; hot and sizzling, like the best satay, and dreamily transporting, like everyone's favorite dessert--goreng pisang. Feast on this outrageously funny and insightful novel of modern manners, and enjoy!” —Lisa See, bestselling author of Dreams of Joy and Shanghai Girls"Crazy Rich Asians is a shrewd, funny, sexy look at the spoiled jet-setter children of the Asian super-rich. It is at once a love story and a potent combination of vintage Jackie Collins and early Evelyn Waugh, everything you wanted to know about young people who have more fun, style and money than is good for them, and don't care a bit. A stunning debut." —Michael Korda, bestselling author of Charmed Lives and Queenie“Original and fun, Crazy Rich Asians is quite a roller coaster trip.
