It was written in 1910 when political correctness in fiction was not even on the horizon, and the main suspect was often physically disabled or disfigured (as here) to make him or her appear more evil. Note that the physical descriptions of the characters are from the original book. It's how writers wrote, and what readers read. Be warned: Miss Ferriby will carry on living in the some dark corner of your mind long after you have finished the story.
